Cellular Operators

Claro

Claro has GSM/GPRS/EDGE services at 900/1800 MHz, and since November 13, 2007 UMTS/HSDPA 3G service in the 850 MHz band, as well as a small 1900 MHz operation in the Pelotas region in Rio Grande do Sul. Since August 2008, Claro has also expanded its UMTS/HSDPA network to Minas Gerais, Bahia, Sergipe, Espírito Santo, Amazonas and Pará using the 2100 MHz band. Along with competitor Vivo, it was one of first two operators to make available the iPhone 3G in Brazil, with TIM entering later.

Oi formerly known as Telemar, but still legally called Telemar Norte Leste S.A., is the largest landline telephone company in Brazil.

TIM

TIM operates a GSM network in the A and B band. Their data network is based on GPRS/EDGE for GSM and they also operate a 3G network in the 1,9 GHz/2,1 GHz spectrum.

VIVO

The largest mobile operator in Brazil that is owned by Telefonica. Their data network is based on WCDMA / HSDPA. Operation frequency: 850/1900 GPRS and EDGE, and nationalwide 3G 2100/850. Minas Gerais state have extensive 900/1800 GSM and spotty 850/2100 3G coverage too.

How to activate

To activate a prepaid simcard user must make a call to any number except free numbers. An automatic system will pickup the call and ask for a valid CPF (Cadastro Pessoa Física), a brazilian document. So it´s better to ask for the attendant to make this process for you.
